What happens when you put a bunch of car enthusiasts and some uncompromisingly beautiful yet rough terrains together?
Well, for the past 20 years, Leisure Wheels Magazine takes guests from the vehicle industry on the adventure of a lifetime! And, for 2019 creating that unique experience meant selecting a destination that has everything to offer – views, accommodation, food and experience – and what better place than Loggerhead Beach Villa, Fire Island.
Undeniably (and for good reason) this is one of the most anticipated events of the Leisure Wheels calendar. In addition to the petrol heads from Leisure Wheels, we welcomed the directors and staff from Land Rover, Suzuki, Mitsubishi, Haval, Toyota, Ford, Isuzu, Volkswagen and Mahindra, along with 4×4 accessory companies, to experience the wonder and (of course) awesomeness of Fire Island, Mozambique.
With excitement at a high, their journey started at Gallery Hotel and they pushed their vehicles to their limits on the 4×4 route to Maputo Elephant Reserve to Loggerhead villa and Kanimambo respectively.
An epic bridge, some bumpy roads, dirt tracks and avoiding the occasional wild animal here and there meant that the road to Fire Island is paved with obstacles – perfect for Leisure Wheels to experience each of these vehicles.
After a tough ride, it was time to chill out.
The catering team lead by Calli-Anne Cooks, treated the guests with a braai and some snorkelling in the crystal-clear waters of Mozambique – while they decided (or rather debated) whose car rode the route the best.
After taking in the sunrise in Mozambique on Day Two, we took the Leisure Wheels team to Peace Parks which is part of the Elephant Reserve.
In an effort for their content crew to capture epic footage, the cars went through rivers, on the beaches, up the dunes and kicked up dirt at every possible corner! Without giving anything away, the usual favourites came out tops with a few surprises from the smaller vehicles.
Mozambique is well-known for its abundance of sustainable seafood. Giant prawns, crabs and freshly caught fish are just some of the ocean delicacies found here – weekend’s menu – all brilliantly prepared by the local chefs and Calli-Anne Gavazzi of Call-Anni Cooks.
As everything at Loggerhead Beach Villa is catered for, the chefs know exactly who to contact to obtain fresh seafood for your trip. From prawns and crabs to fresh fruits and rich spices, it’s a culinary experience to remember!
Boat rides, fresh food, adrenalin pumping experiences – all while staying in a remote, luxurious villa in Mozambique.
Not to mention, nightly performances by local dancers and singers and visiting locally owned restaurants for some authentic, Mozambique foods – it’s hard to pin-point the highs and lows of the trip.
